Residence permit for digital nomads

Requirements for the Digital Nomad permit

• Citizens of non-EU countries (i.e. third countries).
• Working remotely for a company or clients outside Slovenia (i.e. the source of income is outside Slovenia).
• Not employed by Slovenian companies (this is important, otherwise it would be an ordinary work residence permit).
• Have sufficient income/funds for the period of stay - ≈ 2× the average net monthly salary in Slovenia (roughly €3,000-€3,300/month; the exact amount is tied to the average earnings published in the Uradni list and is updated periodically). This must be confirmed with a bank statement or a proof of income.

Application process

From abroad: submitting the application for the Digital Nomad permit at the Slovenian consulate/embassy in your country, as usual.

Inside Slovenia: if you are already in the country legally (on a Schengen visa, visa-free, etc.), you can submit the application directly in Slovenia, at the local administrative unit. You will be issued a temporary confirmation of submission, under which you may legally remain in the country until a decision is made. This is convenient for those who entered as a tourist and decided to try to obtain the status without leaving.

Validity

Such a permit is issued for the duration of the contract or other proof of work, but for a maximum of 1 year. Extension is not provided for - you can apply again only 6 months after the previous one ends. In other words, the Digital Nomad permit is rather a one-time opportunity to live here for a year.
